Certificate III in Children’s Services

children-1The Multicultural Community Centre (MCC) has State Government funding to run the MCC One Stop Project under “Skilling Queenslanders for Work”.

The Multicultural Community Centre (MCC) in conjunction with Brisbane North Institute of TAFE is seeking students (men and women) from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) backgrounds to participate in child care courses.

Certificate III in Children’s Services

Strict legislation governing the caring and supervision of children (Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act 2000, Child Care Act 2002), has made it essential for child care workers to hold certified qualifications. There is an acute shortage of qualified child care workers in Brisbane. Completing a certificate III in children’s services will provide people with the skills to work as a qualified assistant in a child care facility or as a day carer at home. Brisbane North Institute of Tafe will provide training for the course, and will issue students with a Certificate III in Children’s Services on satisfactory completion of the course. There will be courses running throughout 2010, the first course starting in February. The course will run for 19 weeks including practical placement. Training will occur 3 days at MCC, and 2 days on practical placement. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to pursue further studies or gain employment in a relevant industry.

Students will be required to have a minimum of 2+ for their English on the ISLPR scale before starting the courses. Under this program, students will also receive free Literacy and Numeracy support and counseling (if required), provided by trained instructors, to enable students to work through their notes and to prepare for assessment. Priority will be given to those people not receiving Job Search Allowance or Incentive Assistance from a Job network Provider. They must be eligible to work and study in Australia. Potential applicants are required to appear for an initial interview to evaluate their suitability for the program; they will also undertake to commit themselves to the program for the specified length of the course.

These are unique programs created for CALD men and women and will provide them with opportunities to gain Australian qualifications, leading to a variety of employment opportunities. This initial qualification will also open pathways for graduates to continue with further study in their chosen field of expertise.

The course will start on the 1st of February 2010.
