Community Literacy Program
Project Name: Bridging the Workplace Communication Gap
Objectives: This project aims to help unemployed or under-employed people from Non-English speaking backgrounds to increase their employability skills and to help them integrate into their local communities.
Description: This project provides tailored accredited training in literacy and numeracy to assist culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) job seekers transition into employment or further training. Participants will focus on understanding workplace literatures such as safety instructions, warning signs and operating procedures; reading, interpreting and filling in forms; utilizing computers and other workplace technology. Participants will also be trained to transfer their time management and interpersonal communication skills to further training and employment. Accredited training is supported and enhanced by workplace visits.
This project will also train volunteer literacy tutors who will assist participants in small group training sessions. Volunteer tutors will finish the Course in Volunteer Adult Literacy Tutor Training (30592QLD) before assisting participants in a friendly and relaxing learning environment.
Project Timeline:
4 intakes of 5-week course:
- Intake 1: 7 Dec, 09 – 22 Jan, 2010
- Intake 2: 10 Mar – 19 Apr, 2010
- Intake 3: 21 May – 25 Jun, 2010
- Intake 4: 21 Jul – 23 Aug, 2010
Training Schedule: Monday, Wednesday and Friday 9:30a.m – 2:30p.m.
Training Venue: 14 Proe Street, Newstead
Target group: people from non-English speaking backgrounds such as migrants and refugees
Group Size: 10-12 participants each intake
Participant eligibility:
- Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident or Temporary Protection Visa holder
- Adult, seeking job or trying to get into higher education or vocational training courses which can lead them to future employment
- If participant is working part-time, should be less than 25 hours per week
- Participant should NOT be studying full time at TAFE or university (e.g. not currently participating in AMEP or LLNP programs)
- It is preferred that participants are living in the North Brisbane area, unless they have valid reasons to join MCC instead of other providers offering the same program in the South (e.g. working or studying part-time near the City or Fortitude Valley, CANNOT wait for 2 months for others’ program to begin, etc.)
